Maralinga; The Beginning

It began with a mini-series called Operation Buffalo. It inspired us to want to visit Maralinga and go and see the old nuclear test site. It was only natural that when we asked the question as to what game we would make next, it had to be a game about a government secret, coverups, nuclear warfare and what happened at Maralinga.

How is this game going to roll? Maralinga for now will be a single-player investigation game that threads archival discovery with survival. Players will learn the story through items they recover at the base such as redacted memos, film reels and documents all based on archival material. Players will also have to contend with the mutated wildlife and a range of NPC characters who are going to add a psychological element to the game and there will be the environment itself to contend with. Can you survive the heat? Will you find water? Do you know how to survive in the harsh Australian outback?

This is a game about truth and consequence and we are working to make it in partnership with the Oak Valley Community. Discussions have already begun with Jeremy Lebois, the current Chairperson of Maralinga Tjarutja, and e look forward to further discussions in the very near future. The wheels have started to turn, but our number one goal at the moment is to secure initial funding and bring a team together, commission indigenous involvement, complete another trip to the Oak Valley Community for consultations and basically get this show on the road.

A kickstarter campaign will be up in the next couple of months so we can begin the process of sourcing funds for this very important project.

We are also accepting submissions from people who were involved with the Maralinga base. If you have a story to tell, or if you have any historical documents or items from the Base, we would love to hear from you and include them in the game. So please do get in contact with us if you are willing to share.
